Bar Mitzvah & Bat
Mitzvah: Roles for Parents
A Conservative Perspective
by Rivka C. Berman
|
Aside from receiving an aliyah either together or
separately parents can participate in the service in other ways.
Parents may place the tallit around their childs
shoulders.
Parents can recite the Shecheyanu blessing, thanking God for bringing them to
this day.
Parents may want to prepare personal blessings to recite at the service.
This may the only part of the service given over to
the parents. Brief blessings that look back and look to the future are
appropriate. (Hint: Refer to the specifics to back up generalities. Recall
particular instances: I remember when you hoarded pennies for the Keren Ami
charity boxes, and thats when I first saw how you treasured the Jewish value of
giving.)
