248 Positive Mitzvot

Of the Six Hundred and Thirteen commandments (613 - Taryag Mitzvot), two hundred and forty eight (248) are "positive commandments," which are active commands to perform specific deed.  The other three hundred and sixty five (365)  are "negative commandments" commands to abstain from certain actions.

According to some traditions, the 248 positive mitzvot, represent 248 different organs in our bodies. The heart, the lungs, the liver, etc... Therefore, practicing each mitzvah helps a specific part of our self to remain strong, physically and spiritually. Over the years, rabbis and Jewish holy men would recommend specific mitzvot to people who sought healing for specific ailments affecting specific organs.
